In the end, you don’t really play an AB game for the story, so its lack here is foforgivable because the gameplay is what really matters.Įverything starts off simple, with poor little Red Bird Luke blindly launching himself into danger without any real powers or purpose. In a series where progression doesn’t really matter, this was a great little inclusion most people will miss. The backgrounds represent new areas, like moving from the Jundland Wastes to Mos Eisely or being inside the Death Star’s docking bay to flying down the trench run. Also, and I don’t know if I missed this in previous iterations, but there’s an actual sense of progression. There are a handful of comic panel cutscenes that recreate famous moments, which are both funny and neat, but they’re underutilized. Everything, from the music to the characters, is both AB and SW, and they fit together like a well-oiled contraption.īeginning on Tatooine, the story (if you can call it that) rather roughly follows the films. That fear was laid to rest once I booted up the game and saw the developers at Rovio handled the Angry Birds-ifing of Star Wars with love and respect. It all screamed “cash-grab!” and I wasn’t particularly enthused. Having played (not always to completion) the original all the way to Space, my feelings were mixed upon the Star Wars edition’s announcement. Much like Tetris on my calculator in high school, I soon couldn’t go without at least one Angry Birds on my phone. As I spent more time on my smartphone, I decided giving the series a shot probably wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I didn’t understand its appeal or why I’d want to waste my time with a little mobile game when I could be playing the newest Uncharted game. What makes this game special is its ability to weave elements of Star Wars through the atmosphere and mechanics while still maintaining the feel of an Angry Birds game.When I first got my smartphone, I held out on the Angry Birds craze. Overall, Angry Birds Star Wars is every bit as charming and fun as any of the other previous titles. There's also Path of the Jedi, which adds a bonus 40 levels for $1.99. Most of the games 80 levels take place in two locations: Luke's home planet of Tatooine and a pig-shaped version of the Death Star (a free update featuring the ice planet Hoth is in the works). Levels feature a mix of concepts from the original Angry Birds as well as Angry Birds Space, as players carefully aim shots to pull their bird within a zone of gravity. ![]() The sounds are spot-on, from the screeching beeps of a R2-D2 flying through the air to the roar of a TIE Fighter zooming across the sky. The attention to detail is amazing, and it goes beyond just the game's impressive physics.
